Creative Spark…Keep Australia Beautiful

The last week in August is Keep Australia Beautiful week.  The focus of the week is to encourage recycling out of home as well as at home – that means at school, at the shopping centres, on the beach, in the park…whenever you take items with you that could end up as landfill, think about how you dispose of them.

There are some fantastic resources for schools on the site at Keep Australia Beautiful Week.

Most schools and homes are involved in recycling, yet still there are large amounts of waste going to landfill.

So that got us thinking about litter bugs and how much fun it would be to recycle some class litter. So – for a week, we want you to collect any non-dirty litter in a recycle box.  Keep an open mind!  Throw in anything that does not have food remnants stuck to it – even drink bottles and juice cartons can be rinsed out and used.

At the end of the week issue students a challenge!  Armed with only glue, old newspapers and an imagination challenge students to a create-off…which groups can make the most impressive litter bug?

Put them on display and write a story about these crazy recycled creatures…make sure when the fun is over that they find their way to the true recycle depot and not landfill.
